Check whether your PDF contains real text
Try selecting a sentence inside the PDF. If you can select individual words, the PDF probably contains text objects that can be extracted into an editable document. If the page behaves like a single photo, it may be a scanned PDF.
For a text PDF, a PDF to Word converter can reconstruct paragraphs. It cannot always reproduce the original authoring document or its layout exactly.
How to convert a text PDF
- Open PDF to Word and select a PDF containing text.
- Convert to DOCX and download the result.
- Open the Word file and inspect columns, tables, paragraph breaks and images.
- Correct any misplaced text before editing or publishing.
Why scans need OCR
OCR, or optical character recognition, is a separate process that attempts to identify letters inside image pixels. A basic PDF-to-DOCX converter is not automatically an OCR tool. Without OCR, a scanned document may produce little editable text.
Even text PDFs can be difficult when pages use multiple columns, unusual fonts, embedded diagrams or intricate formatting. Always compare the output with the source.
Working safely with confidential documents
Before uploading a document to any online converter, consider whether it contains personal, medical, financial or confidential business information. If sensitive material cannot be sent to an external processing service, use a suitable offline tool or seek the document owner’s approval first.
After converting a PDF to Word, compare dates, currency symbols, figures and legal clauses with the original document. Extracted text can be in the wrong reading order when a PDF contains columns or floating text boxes.
